As Father's Day approaches, it's a good time to step back and ponder the evolution of the patres familias on television.

The earliest portrayals of dads were mostly simplistic and idealized, closely sticking to the script of what an ideal dad should be. The 1970s and '80s gave way to new family shows that mirrored our shifting society.

As feminism built, moms began overshadowing TV dads, who played the part of the well-meaning idiot. Now, in this era of anything-goes-TV, primetime lineups offer a range of dads and family set-ups that, arguably, more accurately reflect modern fathers: breadwinners, nurturers, sages, bumblers and, most importantly, real guys who want to be great fathers but don't always know what they're doing.

TV dads of the 1950s and early '60s were the fathers we hoped for with the family lives we dreamed of.

Palin is likely to be a player — or at least an influential voice. So we have to take her seriously, too. Whether we want to or not.

It's hard to say whether these rumors are more a) sexist b) cruel c) ridiculous d) moronic. (For the record, whichever option you pick, Palin soundly denies the rumors.)

Remember way back in the 1980s when Reagan bashers speculated that President Ronald Reagan had dyed his hair to keep it looking brown, not gray. The reasoning was that Reagan had enough trouble fending off rumors that he was out of touch, falling asleep in the Oval Office during the work day and yielding crucial decisions to his wife Nancy Reagan — and her infamous astrologer.

Pundits concluded that Reagan needed to look youthful — so he kept his hair a robust brown and not a distinguished gray.

Political punditry in America finally has hit rock bottom — well, for now,
anyway.

It has reached a new low because of an absolute absence of good
taste and standards. You didn't quite think it was possible, but it is true. The
rumor mill has crashed through the floor and landed in the basement — no, make
that the sewer.

Some wags are speculating that Sarah Palin — you may have
heard of the name? — had had some work done. NO, we're not talking about
installing a guest room at home in Alaska. They're suggesting that Palin may
have had breast augmentation.

The logic is that, when she attended the
Belmont Stakes in New York a few weekends ago, Palin looked . . . different. Do
the math.

This is as sexist as it is silly. But in politics, everything matters, of
course, so we have to pay attention as we size up the 2012 (and 2016)

I tend to think of making fun of Sarah Palin as pretty old hat. I mean, she has to say something pretty silly at this point to make me take notice. But last night she went on O'Reilly to rail on the president for not getting the oil leak at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico stopped. And when pressed on just how he was supposed to do that by all of people Bill O'Reilly, Palin said Obama had really blown it by not reaching out to the Dutch since they proved themselves so good at building dikes and sluices and dams to reclaim land from the sea. Which when you think about it is pretty much the same thing as capping an oil gusher a mile underwater.

A project going by the title ANIMALS AS LEADERS has a lot of potential meanings if one is looking at it from a metaphorical standpoint. Could it be some political statement about the way world politics has been, or perhaps a general sentiment about the nature of mankind from a broader philosophical view? It might speak to some future post-apocalyptic society where animals have retaken control of the earth, or maybe a playful joke at how some vegan activists idealize their adoration for other species to the point of being led around by them? But personally, I prefer taking the literal approach and applying this name to the music and what emerges is quite a wild and technical, yet well controlled animal, tearing up the guitar fret from fret.

Guitarist and musical mastermind Tosin Abasi definitely doesn’t mess around when it comes to playing a solo exploiting the capabilities of the instruments he uses. There is a fairly heavy set of riffs punched through a 7-string guitar that definitely dredges up some similarities to RUSTY COOLEYEight-String Guitarists: James Shaffer, Dino Cazares, Fredrik Thordendal, Rusty Cooley, Mårten Hagström, Shane Gibson, Marco Biazzi here and there, although Tosin’s songwriting is heavily geared towards a Jazzy and free flowing approach to song creation, occasionally going into Ambient and World Music areas often treaded by Rock oriented queen of the 6 string JENNIFER BATTEN. It gets a bit quirky and otherworldly a lot of the time, but it definitely maintains a general sense of organization and keeps a method in place amidst all of the technical madness.

The songwriting on here actually reminds heavily of some classical solo guitar composers from the mid to late 20th century that I encountered during my studies at West Chester University of Pennsylvania. Few who haven’t gone through a rigorous, guitar oriented music program at a college, or otherwise be enthusiastic listeners of said art form, will likely be familiar with names like Cees Hartog, Carlo Domeniconi, Elias Barriero. But for those who aren’t, many of the ideas on here have a sort of open ended nature to them, avoiding the clichés of the Baroque and Classical common practice eras, but not going off into the murky territory of modern atonality as espoused by some in the German Avant-garde crowd of the early 20th century.

There are some really solid displays of virtuosity on here, such as the flowing and frenzied “Song Of Solomon” and the polyrhythmic and metrically complex extravaganza of “On Impulse”, but Tosin will often find himself meandering out into guitar virtuoso La La Land and losing most of the JOE SATRIANI and PAUL GILBERT audience who like to have simple song structures and catchy themes in between the shred fests. Nonetheless, if you go in modern guitar wizardry circles, this is something to check out.

During Soviet era amounts worth of millions dollars were invested in the construction of Moscow subway.

Each station is like museum, with huge patchworks occupying some walls, high ceilings and antique type chandeliers. And in those magnificent interriors nowadays you can meet people that look like really weird.

When Google Maps's walking directions instructed Lauren Rosenberg to walk along a very busy highway with no pedestrian walkway, she followed the directions exactly.

Unfortunately, she was hit by a car in the process. Now she's suing Google for damages, Search Engine Land reports.

The highway did not have sidewalks or any other pedestrian-friendly amenities, and Rosenberg was struck by a car driven by a man named Patrick Harwood.

Her lawyers claim that Google is liable because it did not warn her that the route would not offer a safe place for a pedestrian to walk. Note that the Google Maps website actually does do that.

However, Rosenberg says she used Google Maps on her BlackBerry, which did not show that warning, so she's suing for more than $100,000.

She should have probably realized upon arrival that it was an unsafe place to walk, though — but isn't that how these lawsuits always go?

Small wonder that Washington, D.C. has given rise to some of the country's most outspoken, innovative and intense bands over the years. After all, the city has seen its share of wickedness and corruption in the last few decades. And the well-defined voices of dissent—from Minor threat to the Obsessed, Clutch to Bad Brains—have always been loudest emanating from scenes like this, where artists' outrage is expressed in sheer decibels and total passion. Reflux are the latest and most extreme in a proud tradition of D.C. bands who stand firmly opposed to the status quo.

TOSIN ABASI

Formed by vocalist Ash Avildsen and guitarist Tosin Abasi in March 2002, Reflux didn't truly become the progressively brutal and melodic band the pair had envisioned until drummer Vinny Vinh and bassist Evan Brewer joined up just as Reflux were getting interest from labels. Vinh and Brewer not only solidified the lineup with their total commitment to the band, they brought the necessary skills to keep up with Abasi and Avildsen's challenging technical material which has the musical complexity and savagery of Meshuggah and the melodic intensity of bands like Killswitch Engage and Shadows Fall.

EVAN BREWER

From the beginning, Reflux's diversity and technical expertise has allowed the band to fit right in no matter whether they were opening for Hatebreed, Dying Fetus or Strapping Young Lad. Avildsen expresses his conspiracy-themed lyrics with a vein-popping hardcore roar, and his clean vocals add a melodic dimension to the always bludgeoning sound. Abasi, the architect of massively brutal epics, builds Reflux's songs from impossibly fast riffs and skittering fills, hammering home his point with huge breakdowns to diffuse the tension. Every couple of weeks I start to itch about all the great music we've been listening to (or bad music we can't wait to slag off) so here it is, another reviews blog for you to read and lol at. These here albums just happen to be some of the discs of shiny joy we've been spinning here at THQ in the past month.

Do you remember Joe Satriani’s breakthrough albums ‘Surfing With The Alien’ and ‘Flying In A Blue Dream’? With the advances in modern shred-ology, where the once mind-boggling repertoire items like sweep-picked arpeggios are chewed up and spat out by teenagers, it’s no surprise to review Satch’s output of twenty years ago and think, “Yeah, they’re good, but not nearly as intensive as I remember.” It’s scary to think shredders will be looking at Tosin Abasi’s Animals As Leaders similarly a generation from now, because the former Reflux guitarist has set a standard with this incredible mix of Steve Vai flash, Eric Johnson soul, Fredrik Thorendahl off-kilter, beardy tubular bell prog and carpal tunnel inducing technicality. As he tackles adding bits of classical, sideways fusion, electronica and polyrhythmic tapping to his generally epic sounding tone and smart chord progressions, Abasi should have the folded arm set eyeing him with intense jealously once he brings this wizardry to the stage. Everyone else will just be wishing a singer was singing something.

Animals as Leaders is a Washington, D.C.–based instrumental progressive metal solo project by eight-string guitarist Tosin Abasi. Its self-titled debut album was released in April 2009 by Prosthetic Records.

Animals as Leaders was formed "out of the ashes" of guitarist Tosin Abasi's previous band, Reflux.[1] The heavy metal record label Prosthetic Records saw Abasi's guitar work and asked him to create a solo album for them. Abasi initially declined, feeling such an endeavor would be "egotistical and unnecessary".[1] When Reflux disbanded, Abasi decided to take the label's offer. The name Animals as Leaders was inspired by Daniel Quinn's 1992 novel Ishmael, which addresses anthropocentrism. Abasi coined the name as a reminder "that we're all essentially animals".[1]

The project's first album, Animals as Leaders, was recorded in early 2008. Abasi recorded all guitar and bass tracks on the album; drums and various synthesized effects were programmed by engineer Misha Monsoor.[1] The album was released April 28, 2009 by Prosthetic Records.[2]

This may come as a big surprice, but the island nation of Tuvalu is sinking!!!!

Tuvalu is an island nation in the Pacific Ocean midway between Hawaii and Australia and they have the Top Level Domain (TLD) .TV. Their TLD is marketed as a Top Level Domain perfect for companies working with TV in all ways like TV-stations and Web TV Stations. With it's high prices of $39.99 it's kind of an expensive TLD to register your domain names under, but since the nation is sinking I guess they need all the money they can get.

Now here's the funny part in all this sadness (you have to agree it's sad that the nation is sinking): Godaddy, one of the companies registering .TV domains is actually warning it's customers from registering domains under .TV since the islands are sinking (see the post at Archit.in).

So what will happen to all registered .TV domains if Tuvalu sinks? That's an interesting question and I only think that will be decided if and when the last part of Tuvalu sinks under water for good. However if we look at other TLDs like .SU it's still existing years after the fall of Soviet Union so the chances that .TV will survive Tuvalu is good. Tuvalu could also survive as a country somewhere else on the earth since I've heard some roumours they want to buy some land…..

The good thing is that there are plenty of other good doain names you can use for your web projects like the .ME domain for example.

ANIMALS AS LEADERS, the Washington, D.C.-based instrumental/progressive band that features renowned eight-string guitarist Tosin Abasi release their first silf-titled album. Fully instrumental and quite guitar experimental. Ambient noises and math rock speed. A great mix and a fantastic production. Recommended to people who like progressive stuff, from rock and metal music genres.

Really, really good technical metal project that veers into modern progressive rock areas and comes across as a wild and insane blending between Gordian Knot, Spastic Ink and Canvas Solaris. This is very good and quite intense with searing and liquid guitar lines that at times almost sound like Warr guitar. There's suddenly a lot of this sort of thing out there and I am not really an expert on the sound, but this was a enjoyable listen from beginning to end for me. If you enjoy a heavy, intelligent music that is extremely well performed, this is the schnizzle!

The songs themselves are catchy and full of little details that take multiple listens to catch onto.

The twelve tracks range in length from minute-long interludes to six minute epics. None of the songs feel like needless jamming sections, a problem many progressive metal instrumental albums tend to fall into. Tightly structured, each song is its own journey, using the instruments to tell a unique story. Whether that is a tale of darkness (“CAFO”) or pressures of growing old (“Tempting Time”), Animals As Leaders is able to evoke an emotional response without the use of lyrics.

Abasi wasn’t alone in the creation of the band’s debut album. Periphery member Misha "Bulb" Mansoor does a competent job on the drums, but they seem to take a back seat, as the emphasis on Animals As Leaders is mainly on the guitar work. He also performs the programming and synthesizer sounds, which add a light and airy atmosphere to the longer songs.

The only notable flaw is the rough production, which tames the heavier moments on the album, sapping any punch they could have. Abasi is a fantastic guitarist, and his immense skills are on tap throughout Animals As Leaders. The album is a strong collection of instrumental music that progressive metal fans will find solace in.

Animals As Leaders' Prosthetic Records self-titled debut is very progressive. It has a contemporary rock feel, lots of good songs and mixture of electronic and rock sounds. It reminds me of some good video game music. Some of the albums' down falls include: a lot of the songs have the same vibe at the end and some rough transition points during certain tunes. “Tessitura”, for example, is lacking in energy and is inconsistent with the overall theme of the album.

Some highlights on the other hand include the fact that all songs were written by and and guitar and bass played by the same person,TOSIN ABASI. The guitar is the key instrument and is played almost masterfully. Moreover, these songs are played on seven and eight string guitars. The fact that this album is an instrumental and keeps you wanting to hear more is impressive to say the least. The record also boasts a good mixture of song lengths and keeps you listening, not wandering off. The album is definitely not one dimensional.

I think this album is a good starting point for the band and sets the bar high for any future music they are to write. This album has a classic hard rock feel; the way the guitar is played offers some remnants of older Metallica. This album's overall presentation is good and I would recommend this to the entire metal enthusiast population out there. [ END ]

Ted Olson: “Torture” probes will never end

Perhaps more than anyone in Washington today, Theodore Olson knows the dangers of the path the Obama administration is traveling on the question of Bush-era terrorist interrogations.

It's not just that Olson is one of the nation's top lawyers and a former high-ranking Justice Department official. It's not even that his wife Barbara was among those killed by terrorists on September 11, 2001. The thing that makes Olson's perspective so valuable is that his life includes not only those experiences but also a keen perspective on the way Washington investigations can run amok.

In the 1980s, Olson was the subject of controversy over advice he had given, as the head of the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel, to President Reagan on a question of constitutional privileges. His position angered Democrats in Congress, and for his troubles, Olson became the target not only of Capitol Hill investigations but a long independent counsel probe. A politically charged issue that should never have been investigated in the first place turned into a years-long nightmare.

Does that sound familiar? It's happened many times, at the instigation of both Democrats and Republicans. (By the way, Olson was ultimately found to have done nothing wrong.)

Now, the president's decision to release confidential Justice Department memos on the "enhanced interrogation techniques" used on a small number of al-Qaeda operatives has again set the Washington investigation machine in motion.

"It seems irrational and incomprehensible to me," Olson told me this week. "They have started something they can't stop, now that it's out. And what conceivable good can it do?"

Olson, who served as Solicitor General in the Bush Justice Department but was not involved in War on Terror policy decisions, knows all the figures involved. "What they were doing was endeavoring in every legal, conceivable way to protect people from being slaughtered," Olson said. "I'm not going to comment on whether it's good or bad to do things like this, but from what I understand, there was a very high level of concern regarding credible threats of imminent terrorist attacks that justified efforts to seek additional methods of interrogation."

As we talked, Olson ticked off what might lie ahead. If there is a 9/11-style commission, prospective members will have to be found, appointed, vetted, cleared of conflicts of interest, given security clearances -- and that's just for the eminences on the panel. Full-time staff will have to be recruited, and they will go through the same sort of scouring. Then commission will have to find office space and a SCIF. (For those unfamiliar with Washington security culture, that's a Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility -- a totally sealed room for the handling of the most highly classified information.) There will be hearings, and subpoenas, and witnesses, and draft reports and final reports.

"And then," Olson added, "if they do that, many people are going to say you can't stop with John Yoo or Alberto Gonzales. You're going to have to investigate every member of Congress who was briefed on this, what their notes were, what records they kept, who they talked to. You're going to have to investigate leaks that implicate the press, who told what to whom. There's no foreseeable limit to how far they're going to have to go."

And that's before we get to potential prosecutions, separate investigations by various congressional committees, lawsuits in civil courts, bar association probes, and possible legal tribunals around the world.

And then -- well, why stop at the memos? "If it's prosecutable because we waterboarded somebody or deprived him of sleep, what about sending a drone to blow him up without a trial or a hearing?" Olson asked. "What if the person we blew up was carrying a three-year old child? We know things like that have happened. We know innocent people have been killed. We know this administration has done it. Are they going to be prosecuted for that?"

And finally, when everyone is finished investigating, what's to stop the next president from holding Obama administration officials "accountable" for some "controversial" action?

It might sound extreme, but the investigation machine has revved out of control before. And it will happen this time -- unless the president puts a stop to it. Olson told me he hopes there will be no replay of past probes, and then added: "But I'm too cynical to think it can be avoided."

I used to work in the Michigan legislature. Every year on April 15th there would be a big rally outside the state capitol of anti-tax protesters, fulminating about how taxes are theft. It wasn't usually as big a rally as the yearly protest against the Michigan law that requires all riders on motorcycles to wear helmets; that one was huge. But the tax day event was generally one of the bigger protests every year.

If you've been near a state capitol or a major IRS facility on tax day, you've probably seen the same thing. I thought about that this morning as I read the Abbreviated Pundit Round-Up, in particular the blatherings of Official Republican Strategy Genius Karl Rove.

According to Turd Blossom, "the tea-party movement is spontaneous, decentralized, frequently amateurish and sometimes shrill." He's right about shrill, and it appears that at the events not organized by the Ron Paul Shock Troops they were also amateurish. But they weren't "decentralized," as one could go to any number of websites and find out where a "tea party" was scheduled near you.

And they weren't spontaneous, because tax protests happen all over the country every year on April 15th. Fox and the teabaggers didn't come up with a new idea, or organize new events. They just mostly glommed on to events that would have happened anyway, with or without teabagging.

We see now that Fox has been touting the next round of Teabagging parties for July 4th. I can't wait for Karl Rove and Fox News to claim that all those people going to fireworks celebrations were a spontaneous eruption of populist anger against high taxes...and how it's good news for John McCain.

The two may not have been friends, but in my mind, Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubinstein were sisters in feminism. I’m sure there are those who would argue with me about this point. Critics might suggest that slingers of eyeliner shouldn’t be put in the same pantheon as the bra-burners. But I completely disagree. In my view, protest, and true feminism, is action. Action in your every day life, the simple act of your living your life the way you want to live it, despite the odds. And by that definition, these women were feminism personified.

At a time when women were not allowed to vote, they ran business empires. At a time when makeup was thought of only as an accessory for “whores,” these women came in a changed all the rules. And in doing so, they completely redefined the concept of female beauty and sexuality.

Legend has it that Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubinstein hated each other. For fifty years they lived and worked a few blocks apart in New York, but by design the two never met. I wonder if they had lived in less sexist times if they would be pals. But, I’m guessing not. In the film The Devil Wears Prada the Meryl Streep character is modeled after Anna Wintour, who probably in turn modeled her career in part after fashion heroes Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubinstein.

And while I’m sure Miss Wintour holds both Miss Arden and Miss Rubinstein in the highest regard, I think that she would be the first to understand their desire to not become BFFs. After all, it’s called The Devil Wears Prada, not the devils.

If it seems like Twitter is growing faster and faster each day, that is because it is. ComScore has released its March numbers for the U.S., and it estimates that unique visitors to Twitter.com grew 131 percent between February and March to 9.3 million visitors. No wonder Twitter is more popular than Britney.

Not only did Twitter more than double the number of people that go to its site in a single month, but it accelerated its growth from the 55 percent rate it experienced in February. These numbers do not include international visitors, nor do they include all the usage on desktop and mobile clients, which is significant in Twitter’s case. But it is a useful proxy.

So to just to give a sense of the type of growth Twitter is going through, here is the month-to-month growth in U.S. unique visitors so far this year:

March, 2009: 131%
February, 2009: 55%
January, 2009: 33%

In February, comScore estimated that Twitter.com had worldwide 9.8 million visitors worldwide and 4 million U.S. visitors. If that 41 percent ratio of U.S. visitors to total worldwide visitors still holds (in January it was about the same), it would mean that Twitter.com attracted more than 20 million unique visitors worldwide. ComScore releases international figures later in the month.

The Three Types of
Modern Day Pirates

Modern-day pirates can be divided into three kinds:

"Smaller" pirates who simply rob the crew and then depart. This usually occurs when the victim vessel is at anchor or at port.
Pirates who rob the crew and steal the cargo on board.
The third type of pirates take over the vessel, re-flag it, and then run a "phantom ship" which in turn, steals the cargo of anyone foolish enough to consign such goods to it.
Smaller pirates are usually only interested in the safe of the ship and the possessions of the crew (the safe of a ship sometimes contains a considerable amount of money to pay port and payroll fees). The crews are most often left alone and the ships are usually set adrift. "Occasionally the ships are taken as well and the crew is set adrift in a dolly. The ship is then re-painted, re-named and re-registered, and sold."1
When the pirates are finished looting a ship they can usually escape fairly easily because they usually leave the crew imprisoned or they force them off the ship before they leave. Pirates can also choose which nation's coastal waters they will escape to. "Some of the people in the coastal villages and local towns of Indonesia, Malaysia or Singapore are even sympathetic towards the arrival of pirates. In the Far East, where many of these piracy attacks occur, pirates have several harbors to hide in and operate from, where the locals will protect them."2

The second and third types of pirates tend to be much more organized, "professional" pirates. They are often linked to other criminal organization, on land which assist them to carry out the sale of the stolen goods and cargo, and assist in the forging of cargo documentation. Here is an example of the activities these pirates undertake:
1. The pirates look for a commodity seller or shipping agent with a letter of credit that has almost expired (this happens regularly since the demand for shipping space exceeds that which is available).
2. The pirates then offer the services of "their" ship. (This is the ship that is stolen, re-painted, re-named, and re-registered).

3. A temporary registration certificate is then acquired through a registration office at a consulate office. To get such a certificate a bribe combined with verbal information or some false and/or forged documents is necessary. This certificate provides the ship with an official (new) identity.

4. The ship is loaded and the shipper receives his bill of lading.

5. The pirates then sail to a different port than the one named as the destination on the bill of lading. There they unload the cargo to a partner in crime or an unsuspecting buyer and change the temporary registration certificate once again.3

The third type of pirates described involves sophisticated organizations of pirates who are able to steal at least $200 million a year worth of cargo. Many of the ships are then flagged in either third world or economically underdeveloped countries (like Honduras and Panama), and usually take cargo that is easily disposed of but not easily traceable, such as timber, metals, and minerals. The significance of the third type lies in the sophistication of these maritime thieves. As indicated by the measures these pirates take, a outlined above, they are professional thieves.

All three types of piracy are of concern. But, where the cargo and/or ship is the target, is of greatest concern since lives ar at stake; The crew of the hijacked ship could be marooned or even thrown overboard by the sea raiders.

The recent rise in the number of boardings and piracy attacks occurring worldwide, accompanied by the disturbing trend toward the use of firearms and violence once the vessel has been boarded, makes maritime piracy a matter in need of immediate attention.

TALK of the town has Alessandra Facchinetti (ex Valentino) already working on Tom Ford's nascent women's line. So reported The New York Times' T Magazine from Milan Fashion Week on February 28, floating the juiciest rumour of the autumn-winter show season. The news was not, however, broken by the print edition, nor even by the style magazine's blog, The Moment. Instead, a BlackBerry alert posted to The Moment's Twitter account informed 100,000 followers in a single "tweet".

Within seconds, the information was re-routed across cyberspace by The Moment’s fans to their own individual Twitter flocks and to an international constellation of “member community websites”, which consist of over 130 million blog readers and over 350 social networking sites.

According to last month’s Nielsen Online’s Global Faces and Networked Places report, two thirds of the global internet population view and/or participate in social media networks, accounting for one in every 11 minutes spent online. And that allocation of time is growing at more than three times the rate of overall internet use. Given Internet World Stats’ estimate of the global internet population – 1.5 billion – we’re talking about a social media audience of a billion people.

Nielsen Online says 7.5 million Australians visited consumer-generated media websites in January 2009, up 17 per cent on 2008. Users averaged 13 sessions a month and 13 minutes a session. That compares with 8.3 million visitors to the news/information category of mainstream media that month. Of those 7.5 million users, more than 5 million – one quarter of Australia’s population – visited Facebook (up 100 per cent on 2008), 2.4 million MySpace (-17 per cent) and 2.3 million blogger blogs (+21 per cent). And 150,000 of them used Twitter – which did not even register on Nielsen Online’s radar last year.

The intel on Tom Ford’s women’s line was leaked by one of Ford’s luxury industry intimates. And although 72 hours later there was still no confirmation – or denial – from the designer’s camp, The Moment had managed to engage its customers as brand ambassadors who traded the information, created buzz and generally inspired confidence in The New York Times as a go-to destination for fashion news. The Moment had attempted live coverage in previous seasons, publishing mini-field dispatches under the tag “The Fashion Telex”, but Twitter has turned that Fashion Telex into a real-time reality.

Launched in 2006, the free micro-blogging service with which people can communicate in 140-character alerts is rapidly becoming a social media revolution, with 900 per cent growth in the past 12 months – fuelled by a media profile out of all proportion to its actual size. Twitter’s 6 million users are dwarfed by the 175 million users of the five-year-old Facebook – which grew 127 per cent in 2008 to become the world’s most popular social network, with double the traffic of MySpace in December, according to the internet marketing research company comScore.

But Twitter is the media darling du jour; it grew by 1382 per cent in the 12 months to February this year. Harnessed by Barack Obama in the first Web 2.0 US presidential campaign and by celebrities such as Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore to declare war on the tabloids and to communicate directly with their fans, Twitter has also turned citizen journalists into newsbreakers. Examples include eyewitness dispatches from the Mumbai terrorist attacks and the Hudson River plane crash.

The Moment began the past autumn-winter show season with 3000 Twitter followers. In three weeks that number grew to 121,000, facilitated by the integration of a Twitter module on The Moment’s main style page. As of mid-March, The Moment was the only fashion news site in Twitterholic.com’s Top 100 rankings (it ranked 53rd; the main New York Times Twitter feed placed sixth). “The growth was exponential and it surprised me,” says Sydney expatriate Horacio Silva, features and online director of T Magazine. “I thought Facebook would be the one to take off.”

“Every time I turned around, there was The Cut (New York magazine’s blog), Marie Claire, Grazia, Allure, Elle,” he says of New York Fashion Week’s backstage Twitterati. “I don’t know why this was the watershed. It happened in the same way designers tend to uniformly agree on a trend that’s floating in the ether. Also, reading a post three days after a show doesn’t quite cut it. (Readers) want minute-by-minute, blow-by- blow accounts.”

Yet if the explosion of social media and its combining with traditional media can generate “mind-blowing numbers” – as the news site Mashable said about the CNN-Facebook Live Inauguration 2009 coverage (136 million page views and 21.3 million live video streams) – why are so many marketers allergic to the medium?

Nielsen’s Advertising Information Services estimates Australia’s mainstream offline media advertising spend – including television, print and magazines but excluding pay-TV, suburban newspapers and classifieds – to be between $9.5 billion and $10 billion this year, up from $9.4 billion in 2008. PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Interactive Advertising Bureau reports that Australian online advertising spending for 2008 reached $1.7 billion, up 27 per cent on 2007, and will top $2 billion this year.

Bureau chief executive Paul Fisher predicts that Australia’s online ad spend could reach $3 billion within four years. That would rival newspapers and television – or possibly overtake them, as is forecast in Britain this year. Until then, social networks will continue striking the fear of god into many marketers.

This is very curious, given the difficulties faced by the traditional media: nose-diving profits; a global advertising economy expected to shrink by 10–15 per cent in 2009; and a game-changing shift in consumer behaviour, one that emphasises word-of-mouth over traditional marketing. “The viral nature of these new social media has produced a marketing network the likes of which no marketer has experienced or been able to tap into,” Fisher says. “And one group of marketers see this as an opportunity, while others see it as a threat.”

Stuart Pike, Asia Pacific director of industry solutions at Nielsen Online, says new media is underappreciated, underutilised and poorly understood. “It’s the white whale of our industry. It’s out there somewhere. When somebody wakes up to the potential of that space and gets the value proposition right for marketers, they’re going to make a lot of money.”

On the advice of their PR experts, many traditional “top-down” marketers are also very cautious about embracing the “bottom-up” new-media specialists who are already engaged in conversations with their audiences: bloggers. And this seems particularly true of the fashion establishment. “(They are) the red-headed bastard step-children of fashion – third-class citizens,” says Silva, who moved to New York in 1998 to co-found the Chic Happens gossip column at independent fashion site Hintmag.com.

The four-year-old Australian fashion blog Sassybella boasts audited traffic of 45,000 unique visitors a month, equivalent to the 47,691 audited print circulation of Harper’s Bazaar. Sassybella founder-editor Helen Lee has also filed to the more popular British blog CatwalkQueen.tv, which attracts 250,000 unique visitors a month.

Yet Lee’s offer of a total monthly audience approaching 300,000 unique visitors for her coverage of last April’s Australian Fashion Week failed to cut any mustard with fashion publicists. Lee claims the majority of them ignored her.

“Magazines have been around for decades, newspapers have been around for decades – the internet is new,” publicist Adam Worling says. Although he regularly deals with the online arms of mainstream publishers, Worling has yet to liaise with a single independent blogger – including Lee, who has never approached him. “None has provided any information. That’s going to be something new for the internet and for blogging sites – to get out there and to sell themselves. People go with brands they know.”

That said, being associated with established media brands and some of the highest online news traffic in Australia did not impress the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture enough to help me gain Paris show accreditations in 2007. (At that time, Nielsen NetView put the unique visitors to smh.com.au and news.com.au at 1,482,608 and 1,258,721, respectively.) Despite having dealt with both Fairfax and News Ltd for decades and being accorded accreditation for two 2006 seasons as the fashion reporter of The Sydney Morning Herald, the Paris organisers refused my request because I was filing exclusively to the Herald's website, not its print edition. It happened again six months later, after I had joined News Ltd’s online portal. Several big brands, notably Prada, also stopped providing tickets after I moved online.

In 2009, more and more companies are taking baby steps into the social media wilderness – and several companies are making extravagant claims about who got to the edge of it first. In February, Roberto Cavalli claimed that he had 11 million Facebook fans. His official Facebook page in fact boasted only 75,339 fans as of mid-March. Gucci claims to be the luxury company with the most Facebook fans (372,404), yet Burberry’s “official” Facebook page boasts more (593,707). Burberry confirms that this is not their official page, but a fan page. Social media gurus might ask: What’s the difference?

In December, Britain’s Agent Provocateur claimed to have been the first luxury company to launch a multi-platform social media campaign. Yet Italy’s Costume National was very socially active early last year, with a portfolio including Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, Flickr, three corporate blogs and 44 employees on Twitter.

At the end of 2008 former Forrester Research social media analyst Peter Kim launched a social media marketing wiki. Of the 500 brands listed, fashion, apparel, retail and beauty account for only a tiny percentage.

Some examples include Zappos, Nike, Victoria’s Secret and American Apparel’s recent advertising campaign modelled by Chictopia bloggers. The wiki does not include Dolce e Gabbana’s Swide website (or the brand’s pioneering use of live-streaming runway videos), Viktor & Rolf’s virtual live-stream runway video, Burberry’s Facebook-MySpace-Bebo-YouTube tie-in with its The Beat For Men fragrance, or recent DKNY and Lane Crawford ad campaigns (shot by The Sartorialist’s Scott Schuman and Jak & Jil’s Tommy Ton, respectively).

Nor does it include Bryanboy and Marc Jacobs. After making a YouTube video tribute to Marc Jacobs in late 2007, the Manila-based fashion blogger Bryanboy scored a Marc Jacobs handbag named in his honour – and a deluge of worldwide publicity. Marc Jacobs Japan recently asked Bryanboy to narrate a behind-the-scenes documentary on the 2009–10 autumn-winter shows. The internet research and analysis service eMarketer expects ad spending on social networks to grow 10.2 per cent in 2009, to $US1.3 billion. How much of this is driven by recessionary budget cuts, with marketers being forced to look at cost-effective social media in a new light?

“It’s actually been a long time coming,” says US social media commentator David Armano, the Chicago-based vice-president of Experience Design at Canadian interactive marketing agency Critical Mass. “(Online ad revenue) definitely started accelerating about two years ago but I would say that the (economy has) probably tipped it even more in that direction – now people are really looking at their dollars.”

Critical Mass also works for Gucci and D&G and has advertised for a full-time social media director for another client, Adidas. In February, the agency assisted on an Adidas social media campaign for the National Basketball Association’s all-star weekend. Based on Orlando Magic centre Dwight Howard, YouTube, Flickr and Twitter content was posted to a microsite, which also showcased an anchor television ad. “This is a very different type of marketing. Not a lot of people are doing it, it’s pretty new,” Armano says, adding that the biggest challenge faced by marketers is losing control. Marketers, he suggests, are nervous of taking a leap of faith into the hands of those who could prove to be their ultimate brand ambassadors – their highly engaged customers. He calls them “citizen marketers”.

“Word of mouth is more important to brands than ever,” Armano continues. “The old school of branding was about creating stories and a myth around the brand. Word of mouth is not compatible with myth. It’s the opposite. Things don’t get talked about unless there’s something worth talking about. It’s not just about marketing and it’s not just about products. It’s about keeping (customers) interested in your brand. Having them become your advocates, your marketers. Because that’s the best advertising you can have.”

OSLO (Reuters) - An ice bridge which had apparently held a vast Antarctic ice shelf in place during recorded history shattered on Saturday and could herald a wider collapse linked to global warming, a leading scientist said.

"It's amazing how the ice has ruptured. Two days ago it was intact," David Vaughan, a glaciologist with the British Antarctic Survey, told Reuters of a satellite image of the Wilkins Ice Shelf on the Antarctic Peninsula.

The satellite picture, from the European Space Agency (ESA), showed that a 40 km (25 mile) long strip of ice believed to pin the Wilkins Ice Shelf in place had splintered at its narrowest point, about 500 meters wide.

"We've waited a long time to see this," he said.

The Wilkins, now the size of Jamaica or the U.S. state of Connecticut, is one of 10 shelves to have shrunk or collapsed in recent years on the Antarctic Peninsula, where temperatures have risen in recent decades apparently because of global warming.

The ESA picture showed a jumble of huge flat-topped icebergs in the sea where the ice bridge had been on Friday, pinning the Wilkins to the coast and running northwest to Charcot Island.

"Charcot Island will be a real island for the first time in history," Vaughan said.

Vaughan, who landed on the flat-topped ice bridge on the Wilkins in January in a ski-equipped plane with other scientists and two Reuters reporters, said change in Antarctica was rarely so dramatic. It was the first -- and last -- visit to the area.

The loss of the ice bridge, jutting about 20 meters out of the water and which was almost 100 km wide in 1950, may now allow ocean currents to wash away far more of the Wilkins shelf.

"My feeling is that we will lose more of the ice, but there will be a remnant to the south," said Vaughan. Ice shelves float on the water, formed by ice spilling off Antarctica, and can be hundreds of meters thick.

Nine other shelves have receded or collapsed around the Antarctic Peninsula in the past 50 years, often abruptly like the Larsen A in 1995 or the Larsen B in 2002 further north.

DISAPPEAR FROM MAP

Cores of sediments on the seabed indicate that some of these ice shelves had been in place for at least 10,000 years. Vaughan said an ice shelf would take many hundreds of years to form.

In January, the remaining ice bridge had been surrounded by icebergs the size of shopping malls, many of them trapped in sea ice. A few seals were visible lolling on sea ice in the low Antarctic sunshine.

On that visit, Vaughan put up a GPS satellite monitoring device and predicted the ice bridge would break within weeks. The plane left quickly, in case the ice was unstable on a part of the world about to disappear from the map.

Temperatures on the Antarctic Peninsula have risen by up to about 3 Celsius (5.4 Fahrenheit) in the past 50 years, the fastest rate of warming in the Southern Hemisphere.
"We believe the warming on the Antarctic Peninsula is related to global climate change, though the links are not entirely clear," Vaughan said. Antarctica's response to warming will go a long way to deciding the pace of global sea level rise.

About 175 nations have been meeting in Bonn, Germany, since March 29 as part of a push to agree by the end of 2009 a new U.N. treaty to combat climate change. The talks end on April 8.

The loss of ice shelves does not affect sea levels -- floating ice contracts as it melts and so does not raise ocean levels. But their loss can allow glaciers on land to slide more rapidly toward the sea, adding water to the oceans.

The Wilkins does not have much ice pent up behind it. But bigger ice shelves to the south on the frozen continent, where no major warming has been detected, hold back far more ice.

Researchers boost immune system against cancers, HIV/AIDS with spirulina

Extracts of a local lake-weed, spirulina, have shown huge potentials in treating cancers, Human Immuno-deficiency Virus (HIV)/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS The Epidemic: A Global History of AIDS ), and malnutrition by boosting the immune system. CHUKWUMA MUANYA reports.

THEY float on water. They are blue-green filamentous algae. Blue-green algae are aquatic plants that manufacture their own food. They grow in abundance on Lake Chad. Though often weeded out, recent studies have found the algae, spirulina, useful in treating cancers and Human Immuno-deficiency Virus (HIV)/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), as well as boosting food production and immune system.

Spirulina are common articles of trade on the streets of Maiduguri, Borno State. Its use from Lake Chad dates as far back as the 9th century Kanem Empire. It is dried into cakes called Dih�, which are used to make broths for meals, and also sold in markets. The Spirulina is harvested from small lakes and ponds around Lake Chad.

It was reported that in 1976, an American, Larry Switzer, proposed to the Nigerian Government to use oil money to finance farms along the shores of Lake Chad to feed the country's growing urban masses. But the novelty of algae, lack of interest in food production, and a political coup doomed this plan. The lesson learnt by Switzer was to develop the technology and a consumer market in the United States first, and then apply it to the Third World.

Undeterred, Switzer later founded Proteus Corporation and the Earthrise Company, which built the first spirulina farm in California, United States, the forerunner to Earthrise Farms. Earthrise introduced spirulina in 1979.

A study reported in Nutrition and Cancer that was conducted among tobacco chewers in India reported a complete regression of pre-cancerous mouth lesions in 45 per cent of subjects who were given extracts of spirulina for 12 months. This was the first human study using spirulina as a cancer therapy.

The United Nations World Health Organisation (WHO) in Geneva has confirmed: "Spirulina represents an interesting food for multiple reasons, and it is able to be administered to children without any risk. We at WHO consider it a very suitable food."

According to a scientific review from Latin America, spirulina has a vast array of beneficial properties. It has been shown to be effective in the treatment of allergies, anemia, cancer, high cholesterol, elevated blood sugar, viral infections, inflammatory conditions, liver damage, immuno -deficiency, cardiovascular diseases, and other conditions.

Mark Stengler in his book, "A Natural Physician's Healing Therapies", wrote: "More than 100 published scientific references help support the case for the health benefits of spirulina. Some studies demonstrate that spirulina seems to possess anticancer effects and antiviral properties. Also, animal studies show that it is a powerful tonic for the immune system."

Donald R. Yance Jr. in his book, "Herbal Medicine Healing Cancer" wrote: "Spirulina's pure protein, which arrives within the context of massive amounts of beta-carotene, chlorophyll, fatty-acid -gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), and other nutrients, is especially helpful to those who are overweight, diabetic, hypoglycemic, or suffering from cancer, arthritis, or other degenerative diseases. "

An advocate of natural medicine and a Consultant Homeopath at the Global Foundation for Integrative Medicine in Santa Fe New Mexico, United States, Prof. Osmond Ifeanyi Onyeka, told The Guardian that spirulina contains the most remarkable concentration of nutrients known in any food, plant, grain or herb.

"Spirulina has the highest protein food which is over 60 per cent of all the digestible vegetable protein. Most notably, spirulina is 65 to 71 per cent complete protein, with all essential amino acids in perfect balance. In comparison, beef is only 22 per cent protein. It also has the highest concentration of beta carotene, vitamin B-12, iron and trace minerals and the rare essential fatty acid GLA. These surely make Spirulina an incredible whole food alternative to the isolated vitamin and minerals," Onyeka said.

He added that spirulina is overloaded with unique phyto-nutrients like phycocyanin, polysaccharides and sulphurlipids that not only enhance the immune system, but also reduces the risks of infection, cancer and auto immune diseases.

"Spirulina is rich in natural carotenoid antioxidants that promote cellular health and lessen the risk of cancer. It also has cleansing chlorophyll which helps detoxify bodies that are always prone to present pollution," Onyeka said.

He further explained: "Scientifically explained the most important dictate of our body's metabolism is to support our immune system. When our immune system is stressed or is suffering, it draws on our body's metabolic energy. People with immune system imbalance often feel chronic fatigue and low energy.

"Both scientific research and the experience of thousands of consumers indicate that Spirulina is an immune regulating food. Small amounts can help balance and stabilise the immune system, freeing up more of our metabolic energy for vitality, healing and assimilation of nutrients. It enhances the body's cellular communication process and also has the ability to read and repair DNA, like a kind of cellular tune up. This is why individuals taking Spirulina often report they have more energy levels."

Spirulina is widely available as both an animal and a human dietary supplement in powder, tablet and flake form, and is broadly used due to its nutritional profile. It has been shown to be a complete protein (albeit with lesser amounts of certain amino acids), high in essential fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, photosynthetic pigments including chlorophyll, polysaccharides and glycolipids.

A senior lecturer at the Department of Parasitology and Entomology, Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU) Awka, Anambra State, Dr. Abiodun Nwora Ozumba, told The Guardian: "It is unfortunate that the country is sitting on a goldmine and is not doing anything about it. The best spirulina in the whole world grows at our backyard on Lake Chad. It is sold for almost nothing on the streets of Maiduguri. Westerners come here, buy it for little or nothing, go back, develop it into supplements, and ship it back to us to buy.

"Spirulina is 20 times more productive as a protein source than any other food. It could be grown with unused land and water. It was possible to cultivate a pure culture on a large scale in many places around the world. Scientists discovered spirulina was a safe food, had been consumed for hundreds of years by traditional peoples, and showed promising nutritional, and even therapeutic, health benefits.

"If this blue-green algae were cultivated and consumed by millions of people, it would have tremendous benefits, especially for the world's children and our planet's future. Spirulina seemed to be the solution we needed. However, it was all theory, it had not been done yet."

Most cultivated spirulina is produced in open-channel raceway ponds, with paddle-wheels used to agitate the water. The largest commercial producers of spirulina are located in the United States, Thailand, India, Taiwan, China, Pakistan and Myanmar (the Burma).

Phytochemical analysis indicates that spirulina contains an unusually high amount of protein, between 55 per cent and 77 per cent by dry weight, depending upon the source. It is a complete protein, containing all essential amino acids, though with reduced amounts of methionine, cysteine, and lysine when compared to the proteins of meat, eggs, and milk. It is, however, superior to typical plant protein, such as that from legumes.

Spirulina is rich in GLA, and also provides alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), linoleic acid (LA), stearidonic acid (SDA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and arachidonic acid (AA).

Spirulina contains vitamin B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (nicotinamide), B6 (pyridoxine), B9 (folic acid), vitamin C, vitamin D, and vitamin E.

The bioavailability of vitamin B12 in Spirulina is in dispute. Several biological essays have been used to test for the presence of vitamin B12. The most popular is the United States Pharmacopeia method using the Lactobacillus leichmannii assay. Studies using this method have shown Spirulina to be a minimal source of bioavailable vitamin B12. However, this assay does not differentiate between true B12 (cobalamin) and similar compounds (corrinoids) that cannot be used in human metabolism.

Cyanotech, a grower of spirulina, claims to have done a more recent assay, which has shown spirulina to be a significant source of cobalamin. However, the assay is not published for scientific review and so the validity of this assay is in doubt. The American Dietetic Association and Dietitians of Canada in their position paper on vegetarian diets state that spirulina cannot be counted on as a reliable source of active vitamin B12.

Tests done on Australian grown spirulina by the Australian Government Analytical Laboratory (AGAL) show Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) levels of 659.1 ug / per100g. A one gram tablet could provide more than three times the recommended daily intake of B12.

Previous studies indicate that spirulina is a rich source of potassium, and also contains calcium, chromium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, selenium, sodium, and zinc.

Studies also found that spirulina contained many pigments including chlorophyll-a, xanthophyll, beta-carotene, echinenone, myxoxanthophyll, zeaxanthin, canthaxanthin, diatoxanthin, 3'-hydroxyechinenone, beta-cryptoxanthin, oscillaxanthin, plus the phycobiliproteins c-phycocyanin and allophycocyanin.

Despite existing research supporting Spirulina's health and healing properties, detractors claim that these are frequently overstated by Spirulina advocates. Conversely, Spirulina advocates have accused health food detractors of dismissing all such claims without acknowledging this research.

Two online publications exemplify these opposing positions, respectively: Wellness Letter on Blue Green Algae, and Superfoods For Optimum Health: Chlorella and Spirulina. Many positive claims are based on research done on individual nutrients that Spirulina contains, such as GLA, various antioxidants, among others, rather than on direct research using Spirulina. What follows is research on the health and healing effects of Spirulina.

In vitro research (example, studying cells in a petri dish) may suggest the possibility of similar results in humans but, due to the drastically different conditions of the research, provides only hints at the potential for human effects.

Animal research can also provide evidence of potential human effects. Human research focuses on actual effects in humans, however, the validity and reliability of the research depends on the design of the study. The strongest evidence comes from well-designed and controlled clinical trials, which are one type of human research study.

Spirulina extract has been shown to inhibit HIV replication in human T-cells, peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), and Langerhans cells.

Other studies indicate that spirulina helps prevent heart damage caused by chemotherapy using Doxorubicin, without interfering with its anti-tumor activity. Spirulina reduces the severity of strokes and improves recovery of movement after a stroke; reverses age-related declines in memory and learning; and prevents and treats hay fever.

Spirulina is effective for the clinical improvement of melanosis and keratosis due to chronic arsenic poisoning; improves weight-gain and corrects anemia in both HIV-infected and HIV-negative undernourished children; and protects against hay fever.

A 2007 study found that 36 volunteers taking 4.5 grams of spirulina per day, over a six week period, exhibited significant changes in cholesterol and blood pressure: (1) lowered total cholesterol; (2) increased High Density Lipo-protein (HDL) cholesterol; (3) lowered triglycerides; and (4) lowered systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

However, as this study did not contain a control group, researchers can not be confident that the changes observed are due totally - or even partially - to the effects of the Spirulina Maxima as opposed to other confounding variables (that is, history effects, maturation effects, demand characteristics).

Until recently, much spirulina was certified organic. In 2002, the United States Department of Agriculture's National Organic Standards Board voted to disallow the use of Chilean nitrate. They granted a three-year window to spirulina producers, which expired in 2006. As a result, leading spirulina manufacturers have stopped labelling their spirulina as organic, citing safety concerns of nitrate alternatives.

The United Nations World Food Conference in 1974 lauded Spirulina as the 'best food for the future'. Recognising the inherent potential of Spirulina in the sustainable development agenda, several Member States of the United Nations came together to form an intergovernmental organisation by the name of the Intergovernmental Institution for the Use of Micro-algae Spirulina Against Malnutrition (IMSAM). IIMSAM aspires to build a consensus to make Spirulina a key driver to eradicate malnutrition, achieve food security and bridge the health divide throughout the world.

Spirulina has been proposed by the United States National Aeronautic Space Agency (NASA), and the European Space Agency (EPA); as one of the primary foods to be cultivated during long-term space missions.

Switzer, wrote about his hope for a breakthrough in food production: "It had to be more productive than conventional agriculture... adaptable to different climates and cultures... appropriate ecologically, economically and socially... independent of the vested interests in world food production and distribution... capable of relying on renewable energy and waste or abundant raw material resources. It would have to represent a major expansion of the photosynthetic energy base that supports all life on Earth.

"Finally, it would have to radically improve the supply, distribution and consumption of essential protein to millions of pregnant and nursing mothers, infants and children. It is absolutely critical to provide nutrition to the deprived embryos and infants of the world to preserve the precious creative genius that is waiting to be released from each fully developed human mind."

Are We Beyond Redemption?

I must confess, last week was special. As a writer of at least twenty-five years standing, nothing prepared me for the hoopla, that word again, that my column generated. Not after witnessing the nerve-shattering experience of Salman Rushdie, the controversial author of the Satanic Verses. For real, nothing sells like controversy. It is as inviting as fresh pop corn. And nothing attracts controversy like religion. If people can kill in the name of God, nothing indeed could be more volatile.
For me, writing excites. I love the incredible power it gives. You can reach millions of readers today at the speed of light. A writer is a magician. He can penetrate the most impregnable hearts. He can invoke passion in the most intrepid soul. A columnist, unknown to many of his readers is also a dictator of sorts. He writes his opinion. That is why the page is his. To succeed, he must be very brave. He’s not always expected to follow Francis Bacon’s ‘idols of the market place.’ He’s sometimes an iconoclast. His personal experience in life helps to form his judgment. What we call the sociological approach in literature. Sometimes you need to read deeper meaning into certain writings. A reader in a hurry would always miss out something in a Soyinkan essay. There are deeper interpretations into every word he employs.
Writing, to a literati, is an art. You may disagree with his opinion on serious issues, but there is always the entertaining side to it. Anger and disgust can distract from this unique experience. At the end of it all, nothing fulfils a writer more than being read. That was my experience last week. Sometimes, I wonder if we are not writing to a populace that lacks the reading culture. That was the theory. But the heated response last week changed all that. Some of the reactions were even lengthier than my own piece. They were heavily polarized. One angry writer threatened to “report you to your boss, Nduka Obaigbena,” if I did not publish his response pronto. I pleaded with him to do so. Another said I wrote to defend members of my privileged class, since I was supposed to be a billionaire like Adenuga and Dangote. I chuckled, and imagined he must have been counting the letters of my articles, not money. There was a particular man I had to give the pleasure of knowing the true me, as opposed to the hype.
I had learnt from one of Nigeria’s most successful columnists, May Ellen Ezekiel, MEE, that a writer should never keep too many secrets. Since readers are always curious about the motives of a writer, and we live in a society where rumours sell hotter than cake. Unknown to many, showbiz is about make-belief. It is an abracadabra. Our friend was agonizing over my supposed romance with the looters of Nigeria, and my fabulous wealth. I took my time in unveiling the man behind the mask. My genre of journalism does not allow me to hobnob with political elites. We mostly meet at public functions. My big friends never worry about my type of journalism because we don’t cause them any discomfort. They romance those who have the publications that attack them. No one remembers to even say thank you when you do positive or neutral stories. I’m never invited to the state houses for press briefings, and whatever comes out of it. I don’t collect land allocations.
I have not built mansions anywhere like some powerful writers. My only property on earth in London, I got on mortgage. My properties are the investments I make in paying incredible school fees on my kids. I came from a background that taught me not to lay treasures on earth. All the big houses I used to know as a kid have all become what the Yoruba call egeremiti, derelict and decrepit. The limousines of those days have become veritable habitats to roaches and rodents. A drive around our cities would reveal the futility of thinking one could steal in arrears and in advance. Many had thought they could steal on behalf of their children, and many generations to come. It never happens like that.
My job is simple. And I love it. All I do is to present the reality of our existence in graphic colours. How can anyone ever hold the photographer responsible for the rot in society for merely taking his shots? Camera lenses don’t discriminate. And journalism is not about censorship. American journalists are recording how American soldiers are falling in the field of battle. They are talking daily to terrorists and probing what makes it possible for anyone to want to die in the name of God. They regularly play tapes that have been smuggled into newsrooms. If such had happened in our climes, the journalist would have been called unprintable names. His newsroom would have been invaded by security goons.
We don’t always seem to appreciate the work of a journalist, and the different genres that exist. In underdeveloped societies, a journalist is expected to be a freedom fighter, and his publication a battlefield. But every journal has its focus and style, and code of ethics. Some articles would look out of place in certain magazines. That is why I chose the right platform of a newspaper to disseminate my views on society. To show that as much as I publish glamour, I still have an opinion. I’m only an entertainer by profession. Just like King Sunny Ade, or Dan Maraya Jos. You can’t blame them for performing at weddings and funerals. Or tell the caterers not to serve food and drinks. And tell the photographers not to capture history in motion. They all have their roles to perform, and can’t be accused of encouraging their clients to loot the treasury.
We had fun reading from our friends in the past one week. That was a blitz of a kind. I have no intention of elongating the debate on private jets. What should have been a beautiful week for me was ruined last Sunday. I had returned to Lagos two days earlier and had to drive straight from the airport to the home of my dear friend, the world-famous Kenny Ogungbe of Prime Time Africa, earlier engulfed in flames. The apparent cause was a power surge that blasted his ultramodern studio into smithereens. On Saturday, I was driven to the University of Lagos to participate in a youth empowerment project hosted by the Ibadan-based artiste, Gbenga Adenuga. We were joined by Chief Michael Ade Ojo (fondly known as Mr Toyota), Pastor Mrs Ibukun Awosika, a very successful furniture maker, Professor Pat Utomi, a teacher, politician and entrepreneur, and Mr Ogundipe, the comptroller-general of prisons, to encourage our youths on how to become responsible citizens. The event drew a full-capacity crowd, and I was so thrilled as I left the venue.
On Sunday morning, I received an early call from Akin, my driver. I looked at the time and wondered if he had slept at all. The voice I heard triggered an instant alarm in my brain. “Akin, what’s wrong?” I asked hurriedly. “Myself and my daughter have been burnt in our house. NEPA took our light and we put our candle… Our neighbor was passing with petrol for his generator, and our house just catch fire o!” My God. I jumped out of bed. At that moment, I was ready to send curses in the direction of anyone who ever had a hand in the failure of our power sector, the fat cats who have spent trillions of Naira searching for ordinary light. My driver was not as lucky as Kenny Ogungbe who managed to rescue his family quarters from the raging inferno. I could not believe what my driver had been reduced to by fire.
As if that was not bad enough, my wife sent me a message in Ghana on Wednesday night. A power surge had blasted through our home in Lagos, and had damaged our air-conditioners, fridges, bulbs and other appliances. She and the children were lucky that there was no fire outbreak. But she was so rattled that she cried and screamed. We had chosen to bring the children back from England to give them Nigerian upbringing, and you can imagine the ordeal of lights going off more than ten times daily. We change bulbs almost daily. The generator breaks down regularly from overuse. Diesel is not always readily available. The water-pump is erratic. The artisans don’t know their jobs. And they charge for jobs not well done.
The story is the same in most homes. Yet some Nigerians are telling us that despite the incompetence and irresponsibility of our ruling government, they’ve already awarded the next general election more than two years away to a man who already looks too tired to cope with the rigours of governance. What manners of human beings control our body politics? Why is Nigeria so incapable of producing principled politicians? Who would rescue us from these sycophants and shameless warlords? Is our case really beyond redemption? These were the questions that raced through my mind as I sat down to write this piece.
We must all rise up and do something. And soonest too.
